Singers Who Actually Can SING: Whitney Houston — Alex Taylor Lessons

This week’s SWACS is arguably one of the greatest voices of all time. Whitney Houston had a commanding, powerful, and extremely moving instrument that took her to the top of commercial music stardom. Songs such as “I Will Always Love You” have appeared so frequently in our culture that it’s almost become a cliche for moments of extreme (often comedicly over-the-top) expressions of love. But Whitney Houston was more than just a ubiquitous punchline — she’s one of the greatest pop divas of our time. Here’s why Whitney Houston is one of my Singers Who Actually Can Sing:

Ease and Control

Ever see a singer contorting their face into weird shapes just so they can hit the high notes? It might sound okay, but it looks painful. Whenever Whitney Houston sings, it appears to be effortless, and that’s not without incredible talent and skill. She sings everything from dance music to big ballads, yet you never see any strain on her face unless she wants you too for emotional effect. In this video of “I Wanna Dance With Somebody,” she’s singing notes that most people couldn’t even dream of hitting — all with a smile on her face.
